The Islands | |||
---|---|---|---|
The Islands is a region in Craftworld based on traditional Japan. It appears as the sixth world in LittleBigPlanet, and as the setting of a Challenge in LittleBigPlanet 3. | |||
Story & Theme | |||
The Islands is a rustic region apparently located at sea. Most of the areas explored consist of obstacle courses designed for ninja recruitment, as well as massive fortresses with intricate spike traps. A volcano functions as the region's centerpiece, full of seismic, moving stones and swathes of fire. The background is based on a Japanese Zen garden with some pagodas.
LittleBigPlanet[]Sackboy arrives at The Islands via Ze Dude's private plane. Grandmaster Sensei vows to train Sackboy to defeat The Terrible Oni. Along the way, Sackboy goes to Sensei's stolen castle to defeat the Evil Sumo and free the Flame-Throwing Cat. Grandmaster Sensei then guides Sackboy to The Terrible Oni's Volcano. With aid from the Flame-Throwing Cat, Sackboy defeats the Terrible Oni. Impressed by his heroism, Grandmaster Sensei then suggests Sackboy to go to The Temples to buy a Flame-Throwing Cat of his own. LittleBigPlanet 3[]One of the bi-weekly Challenges that can be participated in by the player in LittleBigPlanet 3, Sensei's Speed Run, is based in The Islands. In this challenge, Toggle must utilise their size-shifting powers to manipulate pressure platforms and complete vexxing challenges after crossing a Race Gate. | |||

Cultural Influences | |||
The Islands is inspired by fuedal Japan, presenting architecture evocative of the Edo period between 1603 and 1868. Many of the stickers are represenative of art pieces from this era. The "Japanese Wave" in particular is inspired by The Great Wave of Kanagawa; often considered to be one of the most iconic pieces of Japanese cultural art. The area also prominently features daruma dolls, and the side-level Daruma-san is named after a popular children's game Daruma-san ga koronda. The charm decorations are also inspired by Buddhist omamori amulets, whilst the "Wind Charm" is a Shinto shide.
In contrast, many of the more stylized, colorful stickers of the region are evocative of Japanese "kawaii culture". The "Big Cute Eye" in particular resembles the common way eyes are drawn in an anime or chibi art style. Furthermore, an advertisement in Subway from The Metropolis suggest the "Moshi Moshi Logo" is meant to represent an in-universe sushi restaraunt. Another example of modern Japanese culture represented in the region are the "Black & Blue Tie" and "Old-Fashioned Specs" stickers, which bring to mind Japanese salaryman culture, and the typical image of a white-collar worker from the country. |
