Sheriff Zapata is a secondary antagonist in the first LittleBigPlanet game. He's the corrupt sheriff of Boom Town, Uncle Jalapeño's nemesis and the boss of The Canyons. Uncle Jalapeño sends Sackboy to defeat him in the level Serpent Shrine. He is highly skilled with bombs, much like Uncle Jalapeño.
Story[]
LittleBigPlanet[]
He first appears in Boom Town, gloating to Sackboy about how he imprisoned Uncle Jalapeño in a jail cell. After Sackboy breaks Uncle Jalapeño out, Zapata flees into The Mines to try and escape them.
Zapata is ultimately confronted in Serpent Shrine, where he throws bombs at Sackboy, but is thwarted instead when Sackboy blows him up, seemingly killing him.
LittleBigPlanet Karting[]
Despite having been blown up in the first game, Zapata can be seen in an audience of the LittleBigPlanet Karting level, King's Castle, indicating that he survived his initial encounter. Whenether or not he is on the side of good, or if he's still a bad guy, is unknown.
Boss Fight[]
Sheriff Zapata is the boss of The Canyons in the first LittleBigPlanet game. He is the second boss, coming after the Skulldozer and before Ze Dude. He is fought at the very end of Serpent Shrine.
Zapata's boss fight is split into two phases with similar mechanics. In phase one, Zapata will duck behind a barricade and toss a volley of Impact Explosives into Sackboy's playing field. These three bombs will instantly detonate upon hitting the ground, and are thrown from farthest away from Zapata to closest. Afterwards, he will throw a Timed Explosive into the arena, which detonates after six seconds have passed. Sackboy has ample time to drag this bomb to the barricade in order to damage it. After three Timed Explosives are set off near it, it will give way. This causes Zapata to flee to another one deeper in the shrine.
In phase two, the floor of the arena is split into three sections constantly shifting up and down, with more floor underneath it, essentially creating a small tunnel beneath the floor. This can help or hinder the player, allowing them cover for some of the explosives, whilst also possibly obstructing transport of the Timed Explosives. Rather than being thrown by Sheriff Zapata, the Impact Explosives drop from above in groups of three, and only do so in the middle and right sections of the arena. These falling bombs are telegraphed by beams of light. However, Zapata still does throw Timed Explosives.
After two Timed Explosives have been detonated near the barricade, it will give way. The second explosive will also trigger a chain reaction in Zapata's massive stockpile of bombs behind the barricade, causing a massive explosion that ends in his defeat.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Sheriff Zapata is slightly dirty. He wears a black hat with a bullet hole, and has a big, black moustache. He wears a beige, patched-up suit with an orange tie. He also wears white socks and black shoes.
Personality[]
From his few interactions with Sackboy, Zapata is demonstrated as being unapologetically evil, going so far as proclaiming that his evil deeds are fun in his eyes in Boom Town. As such, it is unknown exactly how he was put in the position of power he's in.
Etymology[]
Sheriff Zapata's name is a reference to Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata.[1]
Trivia[]
- Sheriff Zapata was originally named "Sereejinn".
- The Mines is the only level in The Canyons in which he doesn't make an appearance.
- Sheriff Zapata's hat contains a sticker of a bullet hole impact, which also appears on several props throughout the levels of the Canyons theme (as well as in the Wilderness' Bunker level), but it is never officially unlocked for the player.
