LittleBigPlanet is sidescrolling puzzle-platform game developed by SCEE Cambridge Studio (later known as Guerrilla Cambridge) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

It is the second mainline game in the LittleBigPlanet series, following the original game of the same name. The game was released in 2009 for the PlayStation Portable and was later made available for the PlayStation Vita through backwards compatibility on the PlayStation Store.

After defeating The Collector, Sackboy decides to take a vacation. He gets lost in the land Down Under, where he learns of a Carnival that is about to take place between all the Creator Curators, but some have turned absent. It's up to Sackboy to find everyone who hasn't responded and find out what's bothering them so they can get to the Carnival.

Gameplay[]

Main article: List of LittleBigPlanet (PSP) Levels

A majority of features from the original LittleBigPlanet remain. The game consists of themed sections, each with a set of levels. The main levels consist primarily of platforming, with puzzle elements. Side levels are unlocked inside main levels, and there are two types: races and survival challenges.

Additions[]

LittleBigPlanet PSP features several additions to the Create Mode experience in comparison with the first game. These include the following:

  • When choosing a Material to place in Create Mode, you are asked to make it Static or Dynamic. Static means it will remain still no matter what, as if it were Dark Matter. Dynamic means it will move about freely like any normal material. This feature was later included in LittleBigPlanet PS Vita and LittleBigPlanet 3.
  • Sackboy is able to express emotes, which are animations that are performed when the player holds the L button while pressing one of the directional buttons. There are four animations for each of Sackboy's five expressions: Neutral, Happy, Sad, Scared, Angry. Each is triggered by using a certain directional button.
  • The Corner Editor tool is able to edit more than one corner of an object at once, by holding down the Cross button and moving the Left Stick, similarly to the Capture Object tool. This feature was included in all subsequent mainline games.
  • Many new sound objects and Magic Mouth voices are included, alongside all sound objects and voices from the original game.

Changes & Updates[]

Due to hardware limitations and other aspects of the PlayStation Portable, some features of the original game are not present in LittleBigPlanet PSP.

  • You do not spawn automatically into the Pod. Instead, the game has a main menu where levels are selected. The Pod is part of this menu. In it, you can customize your Sackperson and read news.
  • There are two thick layers available in levels for Sackboy to walk on, and three thin layers. This is the lowest number of layers out of any game in the series; the original game has three thick layers and four thin layers.
  • Due to the inclusion of Static Materials, Dark Matter itself is absent.
  • Materials themselves can be stamped only in a limited set of shapes. They cannot be smeared, with the exception of two "brushes": a Circle brush and a Square brush. Additionally, materials cannot be shaped so that there is a hole in the middle; if a shape is edited to have a hole, it will be filled in automatically.
  • The main menu features a Community Moon alongside LittleBigPlanet, My Moon, and the Pod. Unlike the community section in other games, you must download community levels to the PSP in order to play them.
  • The Popit does not feature a Hearted Items section, and its color cannot be changed. Additionally, saved Costumes and Objects cannot be given names.
  • The default Sackboy uses a tan knit instead of a brown knit.
  • Stickers appear only on the front face of an object. Decorations do not exist. You also cannot take in-game pictures; as such, the Photo Booth is absent.
  • Some Gameplay Kit tools have a reduced functionality. Entrances and Checkpoints always have an infinite number of lives. Explosives are replaced by Shockbombs, which do not destroy Materials. Interactive Music is absent.

Before receiving Update 2.05, the game was infamous for its level of stability; it would often use all of the PSP's processing power, leading to random crashes that had tend to happen while players created levels and downloaded content. The patch also fixed some minor physics problems.

Server shutdown & Community Level Archive[]

Along with all LittleBigPlanet games in Japan, on June 30th, 2016, Sony announced that they would be shutting down the game's online servers at the end of July, and later LittleBigPlanet Karting at the end of August. The LittleBigPlanet community reacted negatively to the news. [1]

However these levels can still be played today, as many of the community levels were archived. You can find them here: LittleBigArchive PSP.

Notes[]

  • LittleBigPlanet (PSP) was one of the free titles offered during the Welcome Back package during May 17, 2011 to July 3, 2011, after the PlayStation Network was brought down earlier that year.[2]
  • This game recieved an Everyone 10+ rating from the ESRB instead of the usual Everyone rating for LittleBigPlanet titles. However, Sony used the wrong rating for LittleBigPlanet PSP's cover art and information online.
  • This is one of three LittleBigPlanet games on a portable gaming console. The others are LittleBigPlanet PS Vita and Run Sackboy! Run!.
  • None of its DLC works in any other LittleBigPlanet game. However, the Sacknana costume was remade and released as DLC for Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
  • In the North American version of the game, several of the level titles and descriptions are changed for unknown reasons.
  • This is the only mainline LBP game to not contain the Pod in its traditional form. Although it does appear, it does not feature the Pod Computer, and it is not used to access levels.
  • LittleBigPlanet PSP contains the only use of profanity in the entire series; some versions of the game include the line "Kick his big alien ass" in the description for the story level Frying Saucers.
