Backgrounds are the backgrounds of any and all levels in the LittleBigPlanet series. They are composed out of large, realistic models, that are much larger than sackfolk.
Open space with black sky texture and beige canvas ground.

The Gardens
A fenced-in garden with bricks in the foreground and foliage behind. Garden gnomes, snail shells, and footpath lamps are scattered about. In the middle of the map is a glowing white star submerged into the dirt.

The Savannah
African savannah background with few trees, some rocks and grass. Can hear exotic sounds like monkey cries.
Meerkat Kingdom
Has it's version in LittleBigPlanet Karting, the only difference is that the sky is more dark.
The Wedding
Cemetery decorated with a Catholic church nearby. Has stained glass windows in background. Bell heard ringing in background.
Skulldozer
In LittleBigPlanet it's clear but in LittleBigPlanet 2 and 3 it's very foggy.
The Canyons
Desert with dry ground and occasional animal bones, and cliffs and cacti in the background. Can hear insects chirping.
Serpent Shrine
Has it's version in LittleBigPlanet Karting, the only difference is the sky is more blue.
The Metropolis
American alleyway in the city, with buildings in the background and things like dustbin bags. Can hear car rumbles and horns.
The Construction Site
The Islands
Japanese temple theme, with ponds and Japanese zen garden taking up a majority of the background. In the distance, a red tower can be seen.
The terrible Oni's Volcano
Has it's own version in LittleBigPlanet Karting, the sky is blue. However it's not used for The Islands, instead it's used for Monster Islands.
The Temples
A large, abandoned temple remains in an exotic jungle. Large elephant statues are found about the massive trees.
The Great Magician's Palace
The Wilderness
A frozen tundra with snow covering the ground. A sleeping bear and frozen waterfall can be seen to the right.
The Collector's Lair

Similar to the Blank background, the canvas ground is now polystyrene. In the centre is a moon, some glowing stars, and some clouds.

A warehouse used to film a sci-fi B-movie, props are scattered about. To the left is a miniature city.
Fowl Play
Avalonia
A futuristic car factory. On the ground floor, cars can be seen being assembled by robotic arms. On the floor above, the same cars can be seen being painted.
Huge Peril for Huge Spaceship
Has it's own version in LittleBigPlanet Karting, it's the same.
Eve's Asylum
A modern botanical garden, containing many rare and exotic species of plants. Butterflies and fireflies can be seen flying about.
Invasion of the Body Invaders
The glass transparency was broken when ported to LittleBigPlanet 3.
Has it's own version in LittleBigPlanet Karting, the sky is only a bit different.
The Cosmos
A Japanese arcade with an open exterior. Nearly every arcade cabinet is active. On the back wall, a large mural of The Cosmos' concept art can be seen.
Into The Heart Of The Negativitron
Some parts of the background can be obtained as decorations.

An art studio with a sculpted Sackboy and painted concept art in the background. In the middle is a window and wall, beyond that is a street.

This background extends through the outside wall and into an incomplete street.
This background has smaller level boundaries than normal, however they can be phased through to walk beyond the wall on the right.

Victorian House
A cut-away of a large victorian home. To the left is a clothes-making workshop, to the right is a hallway lined with painting, and above is an attic.
Make The First Move
In LBP2, it's possible to place logic on the level boundaries with this background. Then, if you copy an object glued to the floor, it's possible to copy the level boundaries along with it.
It's pod background version is obtainable even without the DLC.

A spooky pumpkin-patch and graveyard surrounded by tall, thin trees.

An empty background, the floor is built out of blue and grey boards. This version of the Blank Background is built to loop using Dynamic Thermometer.

A desolate wasteland of dirty dishes, mushy peas, and broken refrigerators. Above are tissue-paper clouds and stars.

Considering that all the themes before LittleBigPlanet 3 was released weren't made for 16 layers, the player can pass through the models in the background.
Although the background can be moved a couple layers back with LBP3's background setting although this affects the floor.
Most LBP3 Backgrounds 'loop' instead of simply ending.
Interestingly, the Official Twitter began posting Remakes of the LittleBigPlanet PSP backgrounds, some being simple upgrades, with others being entirely different.
Some fans have found a way to get parts of the backgrounds as decorations.
If the tutorial background from LBP1 is used in LBP3 the moon in the background has Adventure Crater on it.
Pod backgrounds from LBP2 can be moved-a-bit-differently in LBP3 than original.
Some pod backgrounds are able to be obtained on the Moon.
The unobtainable cave background from LittleBigPlanet 3 is used in the Background tutorial.
Along with an unobtainable sea background, which goes unused.
A lot of the LBP3 backgrounds have the same Day/Night lighting colours.
